They were, in a sense, the straight men in their own comedy. Harrelson has even more screen time than Hunt, with the show trying to understand how misguided Hunt was. “White House Plumbers” grabs a few chuckles from how Hunt is only a layer away from Liddy's nuttiness or that he’s a dorky dad with a secret job. But Harrelson's veneers and gurgly voice do a lot of the heavy lifting for an otherwise bland comedic and dramatic performance.

Later, on the outs with Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell, Hunt and Liddy get a chance to redeem themselves. Gordon Liddy are tasked with investigating the Pentagon Papers leak, gathering a team of Cubans -- all Bay of Pigs veterans -- to infiltrate whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Dita Beard worked for International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation (I.T.T.), which was outside the government. However, a quid pro quo fundraising issue between I.T.T. and the Nixon administration would end up being a key part of the Watergate scandal. McCord was another former CIA operative who was brought on in the official capacity to be the head of security for Nixon's Committee for the Re-Election of the President, but would find himself in the thick of the Watergate scandal. And who better to play HBO’s Mario and Luigi than Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux? Okay, fine, The White House Plumbers isn’t actually a show about fixing pipes. As the first trailer for the five-part miniseries shows, Harrelson and Theroux are instead starring as E. Gordon Liddy, the Watergate masterminds who accidentally toppled the presidency they were trying to protect.

The producers of Succession and Veep are turning a satirical lens onto these individuals and their co-conspirators in a new HBO miniseries, White House Plumbers. The show's title refers to the actual name of this group, a covert unit formed during the Nixon administration to plug leaks of classified information (namely, the Pentagon Papers) to the press. The plumbers would eventually be responsible for the illegal activities—breaking into and bugging the Democratic National Committee headquarters—that would blow up into Watergate and force Nixon's resignation.

Specifically, it's in the hands of writers and creators Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, both of whom worked on HBO's Veep and The Larry Sanders Show. The director of multiple episodes is David Mandel, who directed episodes of Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm. And the many executive producers include Frank Rich, who's also an executive producer on Succession. So this group knows how to tell a story in unexpected ways, and to find the humor even in the more serious situations. As Huyck says, “All the President’s Men” is “the ne plus ultra” of Watergate entertainment. But it’s more of a journalism thriller than a study of political scandal. Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” dips into Watergate, but within the larger context of the president operating behind the scenes. With each episode directed by David Mandel (also a “Veep” alum, along with Gregory and Huyck), "White House Plumbers" initially gets considerable momentum from the weirdness of its two lead performances.
